Northern has experience working to both ASME and AWS code requirements. We have several CWIs, and our welders have training in AWS D1.1, D1.3, D1.6, and D9.1.

Welding and Robotic Welding

Welding is core to Northern's fabrication skill set. Using the latest in modular fixturing, our skilled welders are able to produce high quality welds quickly and cost effectively. For repetitive projects, robotic welding provides a cost effective weld with a high level of repeatability.

Robotic Welding

Northern has invested in state of the art robotic welding technology. Highlights of this technology include:

  • 10ft x 8ft x 60ft work area
  • Easy to program for low lot quantities
  • Adaptive learning software applies past weld data
    to new part programs
  • Positioning table allows access to welding from all
    sides of the part.

Manual Welding

Northern often welds to both AWS and ASME code requirements. Welders have been through specialized training to understand weld joint design, welding process parameters, weld inspection and repair. Many of our customers ask us to weld to the following codes:

  • AWS D1.1
  • AWS D1.3
  • AWS D1.6
  • AWS D9.1
  • ASME

Case Study

Problem: A customer needed a custom formed shape in a 24 foot sub-assembly. The tolerance in a critical venturi area was +/- 0.06" and it was inspected by a go/ no go gage. The 24 foot long sections then had to be welded together to complete the assembly (pictured above).

Solution: Northern used its extensive experience with complex forming to produce the desired shape. We then achieved full welding penetration in the 3/16" material for the entire 96 feet of welding.

Results: The laser welding caused so little distortion in the final assembly that the critical venturi area stayed within it’s extremely demanding tolerance.
