Origins
Northern Manufacturing has been in business since 1951. When J.D. Smith purchased the company in 1975, Northern only had 8 employees and $250,000 in revenue. We have since grown substantially, utilizing our experience, value added engineering services, and advanced technology to develop solid customer relationships.
In 1990, Northern developed a quality measurement tool called the Versagage. The VersaGage® allows metal fabricators to quickly measure various dimensions with an amazing level of precision. It was developed internally as Northern was looking for innovated quality solutions to obtain the Ford Q1 certification. The result, the 1st generation VersaGage®, not only helped attain Ford Q1 certification, but was heralded as a quantum leap in measuring technology by the Ford certification team. Northern Manufacturing applied for and received United States patents on the VersaGage® and proudly brought it to the market in 1992. The Versagage subsequently was named runner up for product of the year by Metlfax Magazine.
Northern originally consisted of two divisions: custom metal fabrication and an ice cream refrigeration product line. In 1998, the ice cream refrigeration products were spun off as C. Nelson Manufacturing to allow both divisions to grow.
